How To Refinish An Oak Front Door

Refinishing an oak front door is a great way to save yourself some money over having to purchase a brand new door for your home. With the costs running around $100 to finish the door, and upwards of $1,000 to buy a new door, it is easy to see why it is such a wise decision to sand down the door and refinish it. To get started on the right path, follow the basic steps outlined below.

Step #1) Remove Locks & Doorknob – The first step is going to be making sure that you have removed all of the hardware, to allow proper sanding of the finish. Start by removing the doorknob, and the locking mechanisms. You also want to make sure that you remove the locking plates from the inside of the door.

Step #2) Sand The Door – Once you have the hardware removed, you are going to want to start sanding the door. Lay the door across a set of saw horses that have soft pads over the top of them to prevent scratching it. With the door on the saw horses, you want to start sanding it down with 160 grit sand paper. This will help rough up the finish so that it will hold the stain that you are going to apply in later steps.

Step #3) Sand Again – After you sand the door with 160 grit paper, you will want to lower down to 220 grit sand paper. This is going to create a much finer finish, and remove any of the scratches that were created in the wood with the coarser 160 grit paper. Once you finish sanding with 220 grit you want to go over the door with a knap towel to remove any of the dust that has collected and been left behind.

Step #4) Lay Down Plastic – When you’ve finished sanding the door, you will need to lay down plastic in the area where you are working. The plastic is going to prevent the stain from soaking into the floor where you are applying it, or the ground below the saw horses.

Step #5) Apply Coat Of Stain – Using an oil based stain, you want to apply multiple coats, making sure that you clean up any runs or drips as they happen. Give the top plenty of time to dry before you flip the door over to complete the under side.
